An ambitious petition entitled “Bring back V10’s now!” has been launched urging Formula 1 fans to support a petition to have the sport ditch the current turbo hybrid power unit era and have the sport return to V10 engine (illustration above by Richard La Page) which ended in 2013.

The petition !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was started by Ray Mitchell is “demanding the return of high-revving V10 engines from the 2017 FIA Formula 1 World Championship season onward.”

I support v10s in anything as long as they are light.

...have the sport return to V10 engine (illustration above by Richard La Page) which ended in 2013.

The V10 was not around in F1 in 2013. The series moved to 2.4l V8s in 2006, which ran till 2013, though a couple of backmarkers did run restricted or detuned V10s early in that 2006 season because of cost concerns (not having been able to design a car to accommodate the V8).

V10+KERS pls. All the good screaming plus extra boost without RPM restrictions. Instead of being only useful for short bursts, keep it on, the way LaFerrari has its KERS always there to back up the V12.

Also would like to add an all-new diffuser setup. I want exhaust-blown active double diffusers as standard for all cars.

Yes, because in a series where a few teams are struggling with budgets, let’s change the engine regulations again, which impacts every single system on the car, which costs money. Great idea.

Ok you can be a dick. Use your brain. Even Mercedes lost 70+ million AFTER winning the WCC cash. These power units are insanely expensive compared to an engine formula they have vast experience with. Go look up how much each unit is compared to what a standard engine would be. How much money are Ferrari, Renault and Honda going to waste catching up with Mercedes, and how much will Mercedes burn to keep slightly ahead of any progress they make. All manufacturers could build a V1o in their sleep after all the experience they have. The future has caught up, I thought about tech and staying at the front of all that, I say let WEC carry the green tech forward and let F1 go flat out as loud as they can, it seems like that’s what it should be.

Ever sit and watch a GP with V10s? They reverb through to your soul.

Well part of this is keeping a lot of that side simple so it’s cheaper. Sauber and the like are always in trouble. It’s a long discussion.

Give them a fixed amount of fuel and leave the rest to innovation. Endlessly adding artificial restrictions doesn’t reduce costs, it just channels that money into tweaks and workarounds.

I’d rather leave it open so all that effort can go into crazy ways of making power out of a given amount of fuel, instead of just tweaks at the margin. And the idea of limiting instantaneous fuel rate (rather than total used) is just ridiculous.

The problem is Formula 1 is a very low-volume market, the costs are going to be high regardless. Engine companies are going to be more open to producing an engine if its technology is able to trickle down to consumer cars that’s really where they make their money, and these days it’s all about small displacement Turbo engines, not low displacement V10s.

It’s more than just engine costs, though. Change engine regulations, and transmissions have to change to mate with those engines, let alone whatever number of gears is mandated and if that changes, which means raw materials, machining time, electronics, hydraulics, etc. Rear-end packaging changes, meaning more wind tunnel time to get data on engine covers and whatnot (“CFD-only” is bullshit, never trust someone who says wind tunnels aren’t needed). Tubs change to meet whatever wheelbase limits while using the now much longer engines, the changed aero demands, suspension geometry changes, etc. In short, the car is packaged so tightly around the engine (not the driver) that another sudden change means two-plus years of development gets partially thrown away.

I wasn’t into f1 when the v10s were around, just started this year.

I’m all for a louder exhaust but with the separate wastegate pipe for 2016 and the new regulations in 2017 the sound should improve.

V10’s lasted until 2009. I suggest you edit something there. It was V8’s until 2013.

Also the petitioner’s goal is 50,000,000 people. Currently it is at 1,337. A long way to go. That's of course if 50 MILLION people care

I really only hope it sets things in motion and they settle for no less that 8s. Bernie is at least on their side. Wide tires back in 2017, get some engines too and let them go flat out. All the management should be in WEC.
